Success can be such a cliche, vague topic.
But it’s still important — so here’s a different approach.
First, a simple definition to create some common ground for us.
Success is achieving what you want to achieve.
It can be related to anything: money, sports, relationships, health, fitness, spiritual growth, travel, etc.
Success is determined by what’s important to YOU.
With that said, let’s look under the hood of success.
The 5 Keys To Success In Anything
What are the common factors of success?
What do you need to be successful in something?
Here are the five key components. Embody these and you will be able to achieve success in anything you choose.
Key #1: Confidence
Confidence can get overlooked when it comes to success.
Why? Because it’s something you ARE, not something you do.
To be successful in anything, you first need to:
Believe it’s possible
Believe you can do it
Believe that you can overcome whatever obstacles arise
These are all aspects of confidence.
If you don’t really believe something is possible, or that it’s possible for you, you’re going to sabotage yourself.
That’s why you can work hard and be consistent, but if you’re not confident, you will sabotage yourself in subtle ways.
I’ve seen the sneakiest forms of self-sabotage, both with myself and many others — all due to lack of confidence.
I’m talking about genuine confidence here, not an ego-front.
Genuine confidence comes from:
The soul
Acknowledging your little wins
Acknowledging your weaknesses (without beating yourself up)
Trusting yourself
Believing in your ability to figure things out
Embracing your uniqueness
Being courageous in the face of fear and/or uncertainty
With genuine confidence, you have the foundation of success. But you need more to complete the circuit.
Key #2: Commitment
To be successful, you need to commit.
This means…
Knowing WHY your goal is important to you (the deeper meaning)
Prioritizing your goal
Focusing your mind
Ignoring distractions (and self-sabotage)
Channeling your confidence in a certain direction
Commitment is a signal to your subconscious mind that says, “We’re doing this. Help me find what I need to achieve this goal.”
When you embody confidence, your commitment is strong. Without confidence, you don’t fully commit and open yourself up to distractions, fears and self-sabotage. That’s why confidence is the foundation.
Key #3: Consistency
If you study successful people in anything, consistency is a common theme you can’t ignore.
Success isn’t a one time thing.
It requires daily habits that move you in a specific direction.
Want to write a book? Write every day (and join the Divine Write program).
Want to get fit? Stick to a workout plan.
Want to be a better basketball player? Practice every day.
Consistency is how you progress to success. However, if you’re not confident and committed, it’s hard to be consistent. That’s why so many people have trouble with consistency.
Key #4: Skills
Skills are the most obvious keys to success.
You need skills to be successful:
To write a book, you need to develop writing skills, focus, organizational skills, etc.
To get fit, you need to learn how to do exercises, how to cook healthy food, etc.
To get better at basketball, you need to hone your shooting ability, dribbling, defense, etc.
And guess what? Skills are built on the foundation of confidence, commitment and consistency.
Key #5: Grit
Grit is an emergent property that comes from embodying the other keys.
It can be described as passion and perseverance when pursuing a goal.
Grit is the ability to overcome obstacles and figure things out to achieve something.
Notice how this relates to the other keys:
You need to be confident and committed to face obstacles and persevere.
You need to be consistent to keep going until you achieve your goal.
You need skills to solve problems and make improvements on your road to success.
All five of these keys work together in synergy.
When you embody all of them, you have the keys to succeed in any endeavor.
How To Develop All 5 At Once
How do you develop all 5 keys at once? (confidence, commitment, consistency, skills, grit)
By investing in yourself. This could be books, courses, coaching, mentorship, etc. And not just absorbing the information, but putting it into practice too.
Investing in yourself gives you the guidance, mentorship, accountability and practice needed to embody the 5 keys and achieve success.
The more you stretch yourself in doing this, the more rewarding it is.
